Detour - Guelph, Ontario

It's been a busy fall season for us so far.  This weekend we were lucky to attend the wedding of dear friends out of town.  On the drive home we took advantage of the beautiful weather to make a stop in Guelph, Ontario for lunch, beer, and a little country market.

Guelph is a beautiful town.  I lived there for about a year when I first finished school and I have lots of good memories there.  

Matt loves to visit Wellington brewery in Guelph and on one of our many beer runs, we discovered the Woolwich Arrow, a truly great pub that serves local craft and cask beer and delicious, locally sourced food.  

Being Thanksgiving weekend, Matt was craving a turkey sandwich.  Luckily, their daily special was a turkey burger with jalapeños and brie.  He upgraded to a beet, spinach and chevre salad on the side.  

I decided on the mac & cheese with Thornloe cheddar and Organic Meadow kefir, which gave it a tangy, creamy taste.  It was the perfect thing for a cool, fall afternoon.  

Another highlight of detours through Guelph is Wellington Brewery, which has been around since 1985 and consistently puts out interesting and wonderful craft beer through their Welly One-Off series. Just in time for Canadian Thanksgiving, Wellington released their Carved Out Pumpkin Ale.

Wellington describes the beer as:

Brewed with 100 locally grown pumpkins from Strom’s Farm, this light bodied pumpkin ale has clove, allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger spice for a well-balanced and delicious fall beer.

After trying the beer at the recent Arts & Draughts beer tasting event in London, it was a no-brainer to pick some up for Thanksgiving. It certainly has all the traditional spices you associate with pumpkin pie but it is a little bit lighter than many other pumpkin ales – and that is no bad thing over Thanksgiving weekend!

Then we stopped by Mosborough Country Market on Wellington Road 32.  We picked up some late season corn and some pie!

We picked up two mini pies, pumpkin and elderberry for our Thanksgiving dinner tonight.  Fall drives are the best.  Happy Thanksgiving!
